Shavuot

Shavuot is a holiday that commemorates the single most important event in Israel’s history: the giving of the Torah. It is one of the three major festivals often called “pilgrim” festivals. Shavuot is a time to renew our commitment to the covenant with God and to celebrate the profound gift of the Torah. Christians will be more familiar with the Greek name for Shavuot, Pentecost—the holiday that Jesus’ followers were observing in Jerusalem when the Holy Spirit was given to them. We will have a feast and emphasize the meats & dairy as is customary for this celebration! We will praise God for His gift of the Word, feast on amazing menus & celebrate! Shavuot marks the giving of the Torah on Mt. Sinai. The Ten Commandments are read in synagogues, just as they were in the desert on Mt. Sinai over 3,300 years ago.

Simchat Torah means “joy of Torah.” The name is derived from the fact that on this day Jews celebrate the completion of the annual reading of the Torah and begin anew.
